Hand-bound leporello (accordion) artist book, stiff-covers with French folds, each signed and numbered.
Book review by Gerhard Clausing, Associate Editor, PhotoBook Journal: https://photobookjournal.com/2018/05/31/douglas-stockdale-middle-ground-en-medio-tierra/
An investigation of the various aspects of separation and associated anxiety.
Clausing: “We can consider this project, which is a typology of barriers, a metaphor for the barriers and separators of all kinds that people wish to throw between and among us. Especially in our current moment in time there are many whose main task is to foment social, racial, and/or economic anger and pin it on the “others,” whether we are talking about ethnic, social, economic, or other groups.”
Note: The urban landscape depicted in this book has been drastically altered since the book’s publication as this median was subsequently removed to widen the roadway in 2019, making this a historical document of San Diego landscaping.
This artist book is featured in New Landscape Photography, Lenscratch, and Photo Exchange with series having solo exhibitions at Fabrik Projects, Los Angeles, and on Artsy.com.
